MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — Police say a 2-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl were left in critical condition after a man drove off with them in a car during a domestic dispute Saturday.

A witness told NewsNation local affiliate WREG that a group of women near a laundromat on Airways saw the man beating the children before he ran off to a nearby apartment complex. They stepped in to help the children before the man was arrested.

The witness provided video of the incident to WREG.

It started when police responded to a domestic dispute at 3:30 in the 3600 block of Mendenhall Road.

A male suspect fled the scene in a Honda Civic with Wisconsin tags, with the two children inside the car, police said.

An hour later, police responded to a suspicious person call in the 2400 block of Airways.

There, police found the suspect from the Mendenhall Road call with the children in the car.

Police said the children were taken to a hospital in critical condition but did not specify the cause of their injuries. The girl was later upgraded to non-critical condition.

The male suspect is detained, and police are investigating.
