Man dies from burns after trying to set high school on fire, sheriff says

HAINES CITY, Fla. (WFLA) — A man died Monday after suffering severe burns while trying to set Haines City High School in Florida on fire, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.

The sheriff said the 32-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, climbed over a fence at the high school on Sunday night with a container of gasoline.

“He didn’t do much damage to the school, but he set himself on fire,” Judd said. “You won’t see the video, because we won’t release it, but it’s horrific.”

According to authorities, the man suffered severe burns on about 64% of his body. First responders found him lying in an alcove near one of the school buildings after a fire alarm went off shortly after 7 p.m.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital but died early Monday afternoon.

“For what reason he set the school on fire? That’s still under investigation,” Judd said.

Detectives found a gas container, a lighter and a vehicle at the scene. Authorities said the vehicle was registered to the man’s mother, who lives in Poinciana, and had a burnt marijuana cigarette and a half-full bottle of alcohol inside.

The man’s mother told investigators he had graduated from Haines City High School in 2011 but later moved to New York. She also stated that her son had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, according to the sheriff’s office.

School officials said the damage was minimal, and maintenance staff was able to complete repairs on Monday. Students will be returning from winter break on Wednesday, Jan. 7.

“The building is scorched in one entrance area, but it will be just a matter of clean up and ready when school opens,” Judd said. “There won’t be any delay of school. There won’t be any buildings closed.”

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating the incident further and said the State Fire Marshal’s Office is also conducting its own investigation.
