(NewsNation) — Enacting a daily arrest quota for Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents would be “asking for an abuse of their police powers,” Ret. U.S. Army Major Gen. William Enyart said.

“Anytime you put a quota on a law enforcement officer, that that’s a bad idea,” Enyart told NewsNation. “Law enforcement officers are supposed to use their discretion.”

The quotas would range from 1,200 to 1,500 people each day, The Washington Post first reported.

On Sunday alone, ICE reported 956 arrests, as immigration operations were conducted in major cities like Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Jose and more.

The push for quotas comes from Trump’s displeasure with arrest numbers, according to the Post.

“Almost all of them are good people and they work hard,” Enyart added. “But you know, when you’re put under that kind of pressure, you make mistakes.”

The number of arrests in the first three days of Trump’s presidency represents about 1.1% of total arrests made by ICE in FY 2024.
