(NewsNation) — United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained several people in a New York City operation Tuesday.

A dozen officers wearing vests that read “Police Federal Agent” were spotted walking in the Chinatown area of Lower Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon.

One man started yelling, “ICE is here,” prompting vendors on the street to flee, according to NewsNation’s Jessica Kartalija, who was reporting from the scene.

Around the same time as the arrests started, a protest ensued, and within 30 minutes, hundreds of people were in the streets screaming “shame” and other phrases at the officers.

Coalition, a nonprofit advocacy group, put out a call for a rapid response to the area just before 4 p.m. ET. The group reported seeing 40 agents detaining people “indiscriminately,” as reported by local NewsNation affiliate WPIX in New York City.
