(NewsNation) — Minnesota officials are demanding to be included in the FBI’s investigation of Renee Nicole Macklin Good’s shooting death as protests continue across the nation.
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot Macklin Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday, sparking outrage in major metros across the United States. As of Friday, the state’s investigative agency has no access to evidence collected by the FBI, said Hennepin County Attorney General Mary Moriarty.
A day after the shooting in Minneapolis, Border Patrol agents shot and injured two people allegedly affiliated with Tren de Aragua in Portland, Oregon.
The Trump administration has doubled down on its defense of federal officers in both cases, which they have framed as acts of self-defense, and have promised to harden deportation efforts further.
Leaders in both Minnesota and Oregon have called for ICE to halt operations as investigations into the shootings proceed.
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said “a full, completed investigation” is her office’s priority and described the incident as “another terrible, unnecessary violent event instigated by the reckless agenda of the Trump administration.”
Meanwhile, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has told ICE officers in his city to “get the f— out.”
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who authorized his state’s National Guard to be “staged and ready,” said state investigators must work alongside the FBI after officials said they were not being allowed access to evidence from the shooting.
Demonstrators were expected to gather in metros across the nation on Friday, including Minneapolis; Milwaukee; Denver; Austin, Texas; and San Jose, California.

Two individuals wounded by Border Patrol
“At 2:19 PST, US Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop in Portland, Oregon. The passenger of the vehicle and target is a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and involved in a recent shooting in Portland,” DHS told NewsNation.
“The vehicle driver is believed to be a member of the vicious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents.
“Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene. This situation is evolving and more information is forthcoming.”
Portland mayor issues statement on shooting
“Just one day after the horrific violence in Minnesota at the hands of federal agents, our community here in Portland is now grappling with another deeply troubling incident. Earlier this afternoon, two people were shot and injured by federal agents in the Hazelwood neighborhood,” Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said in a statement.
“We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts. Portland is not a ‘training ground’ for militarized agents, and the ‘full force’ threatened by the administration has deadly consequences. As Mayor, I call on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be completed.
“Federal militarization undermines effective, community‑based public safety, and it runs counter to the values that define our region. I will use every legal and legislative tool available to protect our residents’ civil and human rights.
“I call on every Portlander to represent our values and to show up with calm and purpose during this difficult time. Portland does not respond to violence with violence. We respond with clarity, unity, and a commitment to justice. We must stand together to protect Portland.
“The City of Portland will continue to provide updates as they become available. We are grateful to our first responders for their support of the victims.”

DHS confirmed to NewsNation’s Ali Bradley that the ICE agent involved in the Minneapolis shooting on Wednesday was also involved in the June 2025 incident pictured below.

Portland government provides update on shooting
“On Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 2:18 p.m., Portland Police Officers responded to the 10200 block of Southeast Main Street on a report of a shooting. Officers confirmed that federal agents had been involved in a shooting. Portland Police were not involved in the incident,” the City of Portland said in a statement.
“At 2:24 p.m., officers received information that a man who had been shot was calling and requesting help in the area of Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside. Officers responded and found a male and female with apparent gunshot wounds.
“Officers applied a tourniquet and summoned emergency medical personnel. The patients were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown. Officers have determined the two people were injured in the shooting involving federal agents.”

Minn. state police should help feds with ICE shooting probe: Ex-governor
Minnesota state authorities say they’ve been boxed out of the FBI investigation into an ICE officer’s fatal shooting of a motorist in Minneapolis.
Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a Republican, calls that a “missed opportunity” given “all the mistrust and all the conspiracy theories” surrounding the incident.
DHS refusing to publicly identify ICE officer who shot Renee Good
“We are not going to expose the name of this officer. He acted according to his training,” DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
“This officer is a longtime ICE officer who has been serving his country his entire life. His experience includes:
- More than 10 years of experience as an ICE Deportation Officer
- Selection for ICE’s Special Response Team, which requires:
- 30 hours of tryouts just to be considered
- A SRT Basic Operator Course
- Continuous and ongoing training in several specialized skills, including breaching techniques, perimeter control, advanced firearms training, hostage rescue, and more.
- Maintaining an expert marksman qualification on all issued firearms.”

Gov. Walz has authorized the Minnesota National Guard to be “staged and ready.”
“Minnesotans have met this moment. Thousands of people have peacefully made their voices heard. Minnesota: thank you. We saw powerful peace,” Walz said.
“We have every reason to believe that peace will hold. Yesterday, I directed the National Guard to be ready should they be needed. They remain ready in the event they are needed to help keep the peace, ensure public safety, and allow for peaceful demonstrations.”

Minneapolis mayor accues DHS of not wanting impartial investigation
“Let’s call a spade a spade: Kristi Noem watched the videos and doesn’t want an impartial investigation because she knows her narrative about domestic terrorism is bulls—,” said Mayor Jacob Frey on social media.
Hennepin County attorney issues statement
“After the FBI rescinded its cooperation agreement with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, our office immediately began exploring all options to ensure a state-level investigation can continue.
“If the FBI is the sole investigative agency, the State will not receive the investigative findings, and our community may never learn about its contents.
“We are speaking to our local partners on paths forward that will allow us to review the investigation and be transparent in our decision making,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty.
Vance rejects local Minnesota investigation
“The idea that Tim Walz and a bunch of radicals from Minnesota are going after and making this guy’s life miserable because he was doing the job that he was asked to do is preposterous,” he said.
Vance reiterated his certainty that Renee Good violated the law and that the officer believed he was in danger.
The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.
“The unprecedented thing is the idea that a local official can actually prosecute a federal official with absolute immunity. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Vance said.
Vance attacks media for coverage of shooting
Vice President JD Vance attacked the media for coverage of the shooting, saying reporters should be ashamed of themselves.
He repeated the administration’s assertion that Renee Good, the Minneapolis mother killed by an ICE agent, was attempting to run into an officer and said, without providing specific evidence, that she was part of organized efforts against law enforcement.
When asked, Vance did not identify who was behind the alleged organization.
Vance also accused Democrats of radicalizing “a very small segment of the population” against ICE.
He repeatedly criticized the media for suggesting that the shooting was unwarranted, calling it a “scandal” and saying reporters are misreporting the story.
WH says Minnesota agents were under organized attack
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a press briefing the administration will be redoubling deportation efforts in the wake of the Minnesota shooting.
Leavitt said that agents in Minnesota were under organized attack, though she did not provide specific evidence to back up the assertion.
She also said Democrats are attempting to defund public safety agencies.
“That will never be allowed to happen by this administration,” she said.
Bondi warns protesters against impeding law enforcement
Posting on social media, Attorney General Pam Bondi warned protesters they have a right to protest, but there are limits.
“Obstructing, impeding, or attacking federal law enforcement is a federal crime. So is damaging federal property,” she wrote. “If you cross that red line, you will be arrested and prosecuted. Do not test our resolve.”
‘Hold the line’: Walz urges Minnesotans to avoid unrest
Walz quoted “1984” before urging Minnesotans not to give the Trump administration the unrest he said it is looking for, speaking to the character of the state’s residents.
“The nation is looking to us to hold the line on democracy, decency, accountability,” he said.
Minnesota must participate in ICE shooting investigation: Walz
Walz on Thursday said state investigators must work alongside the FBI to investigate the death of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, 37.
Drew Evans with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said the FBI — originally slated to investigate the death of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, 37, alongside his agency — will now solely look into the matter, at the behest of the U.S. attorney’s office.
Walz pushed back on that arrangement.
“Minnesotans have made it clear time and again they expect transparency … The BCA and Superintendent Evans have earned that trust by delivering on that expectation,” Walz said.
The City of Minneapolis echoed his statement: “The decision to remove the BCA from the ICE fatal shooting investigation is deeply disappointing. We are concerned that the investigation is proceeding without state partners, and we are calling for a clear and transparent process that includes state investigating agencies.”
“If you truly wanted to de-escalate that procedure, you would wait until all the facts come out,” Walz said of the investigation.
‘Unimaginable tragedy’: Gov. Walz talks public safety after ICE shooting
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz held a press briefing on public safety in the wake of the shooting.
“I would like to start again extending sympathies to Renee Good’s wife and child, to the rest of the family,” Walz said, describing the shooting as an “unimaginable tragedy.”
He said a fund has been set up to support her family.
“Minnesotans will be there to defend her honor, and see this as a human being, not a moment in time,” Walz said.
Noem again defends ICE officer in fatal Minneapolis shooting
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said “provocative talk” from Democratic leaders is to blame for “why we are standing where we are today” following Wednesday’s ICE-involved shooting death of a woman in Minneapolis.
Addressing Minnesota leadership specifically, Noem said, “They’re allowing the situation to be volatile. They’re not doing their work. They haven’t for years.”
She refused to offer specific details about the officer who shot Renee Nicole Macklin Good, only saying he is an “experienced officer that has served a number of years.”
Noem expects reviews into the officer’s conduct will find “he acted appropriately to protect his life” and others.
‘Just protecting federal facilities’: Border Patrol’s Bovino in Minneapolis
When asked for comment about the ongoing protests in Minneapolis, Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino told NewsNation: “We’re just protecting federal facilities and making sure that order remains as it should.”
When asked about the use of force in Wednesday’s shooting, Bovino answered, “No comment.”
Minnesota investigators barred from helping FBI on ICE shooting case
The U.S. attorney’s office has barred Minnesota’s state investigation agency from assisting in a federal investigation into Renee Good’s shooting death in Minnesota.
Drew Evans with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said “it was decided that the BCA Force Investigations Unit would conduct a joint investigation with the FBI” on Wednesday, but the plan has since changed.
Instead, the U.S. attorney’s office decided the investigation would “be led solely by the FBI, and the BCA would no longer have access to the case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation,” Evans wrote.
“Without complete access to the evidence, witnesses and information collected, we cannot meet the investigative standards that Minnesota law and the public demands,” Evans continued. “As a result, the BCA has reluctantly withdrawn from the investigation.
