(NewsNation) — The federal immigration officer who shot and killed Renee Nicole Macklin Good suffered internal bleeding after the incident, a Homeland Security official confirmed to NewsNation.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has previously said officer Jonathan Ross was hit by Macklin Good’s vehicle on Jan. 7, backing up the administration’s claims he shot the 37-year-old motorist in “self-defense.”

“He went to the hospital. A doctor did treat him. He has been released, but he’s going to spend some time with his family,” Noem said last week.

Federal officials maintain Macklin Good intended to run Ross over and have labeled her a “domestic terrorist,” though activists and lawmakers in Minnesota contend she was trying to leave the scene when she reversed her vehicle.

“I would bet you that she, under normal circumstances, was a very solid, wonderful person,” President Donald Trump said of the incident. “But, you know, her actions were pretty tough.”

Ross has more than 10 years of experience with the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations unit, a specially trained tactical unit. He was previously involved in a June incident in which he was dragged by a vehicle driven by a DHS target, according to a source within the department.
