(NewsNation) — The family of Brian Laundrie says the new Netflix Gabby Petito documentary series is a one-sided look at the relationship of the two young adults.

In a statement provided to PEOPLE by the Laundrie family’s attorney, Chris and Roberta Laundrie say the new documentary series “American Murder: Gabby Petito” did not paint the full picture of what happened.

“The documentary was what we expected. One perspective depicted as the ‘truth’ as seen through their lens. Similar to Republicans and Democrats fighting it out lately. Hard to see through the lens of the other with all the noise and distrust.”

Petito vanished in 2021 while on a cross-country road trip with Laundrie in a converted camper van. The two became the center of a nationwide investigation after Laundrie returned home without Petito.

Petito, a 22-year-old aspiring blogger, documented their journey on social media, specifically through her YouTube channel, before abruptly stopping. Gabby’s Ford Transit Connect was a regular feature in the travel reports she posted online before she disappeared in 2021.

Authorities believe she was killed by Laundrie in Wyoming before he killed himself in Florida. Her body was found at a camping area in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming on Sept. 19, 2021, days after a nationwide search was launched. His body was later found near the Carlton Reserve in South Florida on Oct. 20, 2021.

The Laundrie family did not participate in the documentary.

“The documentary contained many inaccuracies, incorrect juxtapositions of timelines, and misstatements and omissions of fact — perhaps deliberate to capture their ‘truth’, perhaps due to simple error,” the statement issued to PEOPLE continued.

The family, however, acknowledged that Brian Laundrie killed Petito.

“We all know Brian took Gabby’s life and Brian then took his own as well. Let the parents of both Gabby and Brian mourn and remember them in peace.”
