(NewsNation) — Pope Leo XIV is calling for world leaders and their enemies to meet face-to-face.

Pope Leo XIV sent out the call for the interaction in his first tweets on Wednesday since being named the 267th leader of the Catholic Church last week.

“The Holy See is willing to help enemies meet, so they may look each other in the eye and so people may be given back the dignity they deserve: the dignity of peace,” he said on social media platform X. “With heart in hand, I say to the leaders of nations: let us meet; let us dialogue; let us negotiate!”

Since being named Pope, Leo has also vowed to make efforts to work for peace in regions where Christians are persecuted and have been forced to flee. On Tuesday, he celebrated Mass and had lunch with members of his Augustinian religious order.

Leo also sent out a series of messages touching on violence, war, and the search for peace.

He has already amassed nearly 20 million followers.
