(NewsNation) — The nephew of President Donald Trump is hitting back at his uncle for using an ableist slur in a Truth Social post.

“As the parent of a young adult with severe disabilities, the use of the ‘R’ word is never acceptable and is very hurtful,” Fred Trump III wrote in a post on social platform X. “Where has this country gone that we even have to discuss this?”

In a Truth Social post shared on Thursday, Trump criticized “citizens” and “patriots” who he claims have been “just plain STUPID” when it comes to immigration, and also took aim at the Somali population in Minnesota, as well as criticizing the state’s governor, Tim Walz.

He said in the post: “Walz, does nothing, either through fear, incompetence, or both,” while using the derogatory word for people with intellectual disabilities.

Trump later doubled down on his comments on Walz after reporters pointed out that using the word is found to be offensive to many Americans. He told reporters that there’s “something wrong with him.”

During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Walz said Trump’s usage of the word is “damaging” and aims to “demonize our children.”
