President Trump signed an executive order from the White House on Tuesday afternoon, aiming to bolster U.S. coal mining.

In the order, the president is expected to define coal as “mineral,” which will allow it to benefit from previous executive actions on mining that — among other things — used presidential wartime authorities to expedite production. The Trump administration will also seek to exclude coal projects from environmental reviews and prioritize coal production on federal lands.

Coal’s share of the energy market has declined in recent years amid a rise in gas and renewable energy sources. But, upon returning to office earlier this year, Trump is hoping to see more of the nation’s energy come from coal.
