(NewsNation) — The daughter of the late Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., is running for his seat in the House in this fall’s special election.

Adelita Grijalva made the announcement in a post on X, saying Arizona “deserves a progressive champion that will stand up to Donald Trump and fight for working families.”

Rep. Grijalva, who spent more than two decades in the House, died earlier this month after fighting lung cancer. He was 77 years old.

Grijalva is currently a member of the Pima County Board of Supervisors. She has submitted her resignation letter to the board, effective April 4.

Grijalva will be facing former Arizona state house member Daniel Hernández Jr. in the Democratic primary, which takes place July 15.
