(NewsNation) — Jacob Frey, the Democratic mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota, is telling the ICE agents that have been sent to the state to “get the f— out” of the city following a fatal shooting.
“We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being here in this city was to create some kind of safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite,” Frey said during a news conference Wednesday. “People are being hurt, families are being ripped apart, longtime Minneapolis residents who have contributed so greatly are being terrorized, and now someone is dead. That’s on you.”
In December, it was announced federal agents would be headed to Minnesota for a targeted immigration enforcement operation that would focus on Somali immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. On Tuesday, DHS said it was deploying thousands of agents there as a result of the fraud allegations there.
“It is on you to make sure that further damage, further loss of life and injury is not done,” Frey added.
Following the news of the ICE operation that would be taking place in the state and President Donald Trump’s comments on the Somali community, Frey said the city’s police department would not be assisting, saying “it’s not their job.”
“Targeting Somali people means that due process will be violated, mistakes will be made, and let’s be clear, it means that American citizens will be detained for no other reason than the fact that they look like they are Somali,” Frey said. “That is not now and will never be a legitimate reason.”
