(NewsNation) — West Virginia voters will head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in some pivotal races in the 2024 general election.
Presidential race in West Virginia
Former President Donald Trump is projected to win West Virginia.
US Senate race in West Virginia
In a pickup for Republicans, Jim Justice is projected to win the Senate seat previously held by Sen. Joe Manchin.
In addition to voting in the race for the White House between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, West Virginians will cast ballots for governor, the U.S. Senate, the state’s two congressional seats and one ballot measure.
Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey faces Democrat Steve Williams for governor after Jim Justice announced he would not seek reelection to instead run for the U.S. Senate.
Justice is vying for the vacancy created when Democrat Joe Manchin announced he would not seek reelection. Justice will square off against Democrat and Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott. The race results are expected to have a direct impact on whether Democrats can maintain a majority in the Senate.
US House races in West Virginia
In the U.S. House of Representatives races, Republicans Carol Miller (1st District) and Riley Moore (2nd District) will both seek to defeat their Democratic challengers. Chris Reed, a retired educator, is facing Miller, while Moore will face off against Democrat Steven Wendelin, a retired Navy commander.
Statewide ballot measure in West Virginia
Voters will also consider a proposed amendment to the West Virginia state constitution that would prohibit people from participating in medically assisted suicide, euthanasia or mercy killing.
On Tuesday, 468 U.S. congressional seats (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election.
Polls close at 7:30 p.m. in West Virginia. West Virgina holds 4 Electoral College votes. After remaining a reliable blue state for decades, West Virginia has shifted toward the Republicans for the past 24 years. Trump defeated President Joe Biden in the state in 2020 by collecting 68.6% of ballots.
