(NewsNation) — Actor George Clooney has backed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president after previously calling for President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 election.

Clooney on Tuesday praised Biden for showing “true leadership” by ending his reelection campaign, stating the president was “saving democracy once again,” in a statement to NewsNation.

He also endorsed Harris’ presidential bid, stating, “We’re all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic quest.”

Clooney, a lifelong Democrat, called for Biden to leave the presidential race over age-related concerns about his physical and mental acuity earlier this month.

In a New York Times opinion piece, Clooney said he loves Biden, but argued the party would lose the presidential race as well as any control in Congress with him as the nominee.

Clooney’s calls came weeks after headlining a fundraiser that brought in a record single-night haul for the president’s reelection campaign.

Although he previously vowed to stay in the race, Biden ended his reelection bid Sunday after pressure from several fellow Democrats and public figures calling for his withdrawal. He endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee.
