(NewsNation) — Republican Montana Sen. Steven Daines said the United States must stand by Israel in its conflict with Iran, as the Islamic Republic poses an existential threat to the western world.

“Once this regime topples, this is a reset for the Middle East, and a reset for the world,” Daines said. “One of the greatest gifts we could give our children or grandchildren would be to stop or destroy the nuclear capabilities of Iran.”

Daines added that President Donald Trump’s stance on making sure Iran does not have nuclear weapons will be part of his lasting legacy in office.

A spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces told NewsNation they have destroyed Iranian aerial defense systems in what he described as a “very successful operation” aimed at stopping Iran from producing nuclear weapons.

Trump has opposed a ceasefire between the two countries, saying Iran needs to “surrender.”
