(NewsNation) — Sen. Dave McCormick says what’s playing out in Iran is the “bankruptcy of the Iranian regime.”
“Sky-high inflation, the suppression of human rights; their grip on the Iranian people is crumbling,” the Pennsylvania Republican said during an appearance on Monday’s “On Balance.”
The Islamic state is currently experiencing its biggest protests in four years, as its economy continues to flounder.
Iran recently said it was no longer enriching uranium at any site in the country, trying to signal to the west that it remains open to potential negotiations over its atomic program to ease sanctions.
Human rights activists have reportedly said at least 20 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 protesters have been arrested since the violence began.

The Iranian protests show no sign of stopping and follow President Donald Trump warning the country Friday that if Tehran “violently kills peaceful protesters,” the United States “will come to their rescue.”
“A regime change, I think, is not an explicit goal. Nor should it be, in my opinion,” McCormick added. “Not through military means, but supporting the people, the freedom fighters on the ground.”
McCormick pointed out Iranian citizens who want to overthrow the current regime need to find a specific path, even if the U.S. can provide the necessary military power and economic tools to help.
“We need to support them along the way,” McCormick said. “Any possible regime change where America gets in the middle of that is something (in which) we should proceed with great caution.”
