(NewsNation) — Human remains discovered last month on a Swiss glacier have been identified as those of a man who went missing in 1994, according to authorities.

Climbers ascending the Ober Gabelhorn mountain discovered human remains, the Valais Cantonal Police stated in a press release.

Upon being notified of the discovery, officers helicoptered to the location “to secure the remains and personal belongings,” police added.

Authorities identified the man as a Swiss citizen born in 1969. Previous investigations revealed that two climbers had gone missing in the area in 1994.

One of the two climbers was found in 2000, and the discovery of the second climber’s remains has put an end to the mystery of their disappearance.

Melting glaciers reveal missing people

Increased global temperatures due to climate change have caused glaciers to melt and revealed several missing people in recent years, as reported by CBS News.

In August, the British Antarctic Society announced that the remains of researcher Dennis “Tink” Bell, who disappeared in 1959 at the age of 25, were discovered amid rocks near a melting glacier in Antarctica.

The same month, the body of a man who went missing 28 years ago was found on a melting glacier in Pakistan.
