(NewsNation) — Recovery operations for a 26-year-old climber in Oregon who went missing over the weekend were suspended Sunday due to poor weather conditions, the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Saturday at around 11:30 a.m., the HRCSO said they received a report from a climbing partner that Matthew Aldridge was overdue. Aldridge was part of a trio of climbers who started at Mt. Hood Meadows ski resort with the intention of summiting Oregon’s iconic Mt. Hood, as reported by local NewsNation affiliate KOIN in Oregon.

“Two climbers turned back due to conditions, but Matthew continued his ascent. When the partners had not heard from him, they called to report him overdue,” HRCSO said.

A search for Aldridge commenced the same day, with the use of HRCSO fixed-wing aircraft, searchers on the ground and analysis of cell phone data.

“The first attempt to reach the area with ground searchers was unsuccessful due to darkness and unsafe conditions,” HRCSO said.

The sheriff’s office and multiple other search and rescue organizations resumed the search early Sunday morning, but they were once again unsuccessful.

“Due to deteriorating weather and treacherous conditions, the Sheriff’s Office made the difficult decision at midday to withdraw searchers and suspend the ground search for Matthew,” HRCSO said. “Additional efforts may be attempted as conditions allow, but the search has shifted to a recovery mission.”
