(NewsNation) — A body that was found in a dumpster in 1982 has been identified as a teenage girl who went missing two years prior.
Fifteen-year-old Susan Mann was last seen at her home in Hollis, a neighborhood in Queens, New York, on May 17, 1980, according to the Nassau County Police Department. Human remains were later found in November 1982 in a dumpster on Long Island.
In a statement, the police department said it had confirmed the remains belong to Mann.
Local news outlet NBC New York reports that police exhumed the body — previously a “Jane Doe” — in 2023 to obtain a DNA sample, which was later sent to the FBI’s New York Investigative Genealogy Program. From that, authorities established a familial DNA match, and Mann’s family confirmed the identification.
Police are investigating the case as a homicide and are asking for the public’s help in locating possible suspects. Nassau County Crime Stoppers is also offering a $5,000 reward for any information.
