Missing man, his dog found alive in Tennessee woods

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A missing man and his lost dog were found alive Tuesday morning in a swampy, wooded area in Haywood County, Tennessee by searchers from several agencies.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said they assisted Haywood County EMA along with agencies from several surrounding counties in finding the pair, who disappeared Monday.

TBI said the man had been trying to find his lost dog Baxter.

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Steven Troy Roper, 63.

They said Roper’s wife dropped him off in the Big Eddy area around 10 a.m. Monday to look for the dog, then returned home.

She later received a a text from her husband showing him standing in chest-deep water, and then a phone call telling her he’d found Baxter, but was trying to figure a way out of the area, the sheriff’s department said.

She reported him missing around 3:30 Monday.

Roper was taken for a medical evaluation. Baxter the dog was checked for injuries and “given a much-needed bath by TBI agents.”
