Missing New York kayaker found dead in water: Police

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (PIX11) — One of two men who vanished during a kayaking trip on New York’s Long Island on Saturday was found dead on Sunday, according to police.

Shane Garcia, 27, was found in Shinnecock Bay by New York State Police divers on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Garcia was reported missing on Saturday by his girlfriend after he did not return from kayaking with his 25-year-old friend, Aaron Montemarano, according to police. Officials said Garcia had sent a picture to his girlfriend of Montemarano and himself while they were out kayaking in Southampton.

Search efforts continued on Sunday by Southampton and New York State Police. Officials found two stranded kayaks and paddles that had washed ashore near Shinnecock East County Park.

Using drones, ATVs and a search helicopter, police located an area where one of the kayakers may have been found. Divers went below and found Garcia dead in the water.

The water search continued until the sun went down. Montemarano is still missing, according to police.

The search will continue on Monday.
