ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A missing and endangered teenage girl was found during a traffic stop in Asheboro on Christmas Eve, according to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday, deputies tried to pull over a vehicle on West Dixie Drive in Asheboro.

Investigators say that the driver, 35-year-old Toni Charles Koontz, initially failed to stop; however, he eventually pulled over in the area of US 64 and Park Street. Koontz did not have a valid driver’s license and “displayed signs of extreme nervousness.” A K-9 unit was brought in and alerted deputies to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.

The vehicle was searched and methamphetamine, heroin, and multiple items of drug paraphernalia were seized.

Deputies say that a juvenile female was also in the vehicle and initially provided false identification information. It was later discovered that the juvenile had been reported as missing and endangered. She was turned over to the Randolph County Department of Social Services.

According to a warrant for Koontz’s arrest, the missing girl was 16 years old.

Koontz was taken into custody and charged with the following:

  • Felony possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine
  • Felony possession with intent to sell and deliver heroin
  • Felony maintaining a vehicle for controlled substances
  • Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Misdemeanor driving while license revoked
  • Misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor

Koontz is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
