Crews search Mississippi River for missing person after boating accident

Emergency responders are searching the Mississippi River near Savanna for a person reported missing after a boating accident over the weekend.

A release from the Carroll County Emergency Management Agency says the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a boating accident on Saturday, May 31 at about 5:33 p.m. Two people were involved; one person was on shore and the other was missing in the water.


Savanna Fire and EMS were immediately dispatched, along with the Caroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Carroll County Emergency Management Agency (EMA). An Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) officer and boat were on the water and responded.

Crews remained on the scene to search until about 11 p.m. on Saturday. Search operations resumed at 7 a.m. on Sunday but were paused around 5 p.m. due to conditions and visibility. Search efforts began again this morning. The incident is under investigation by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
