(NewsNation) — Human remains found Saturday in Scott’s Bluff National Monument, Nebraska, may belong to a Wyoming man who has been missing since 2019. One local resident tells NewsNation that where the remains were found is close to where the missing man was last seen.
Chance Englebert was 25 when he went missing during a trip to visit family in Gering, Nebraska. He had been arguing with his wife and her family, and after saying he wanted to go back to Wyoming, he got out of her car and began walking.
Englebert was last seen on surveillance video walking through Gering, about an hour before a storm hit the area. After nearly six years, Englebert’s mother reportedly received a call from the Gering Police Department on Saturday that they had made a discovery that could be related to her son’s disappearance.
Remains found close to where Englebert was last seen
Kelly Mumm, a local who was hiking with his dog in Scott’s Bluff National Monument when police found the remains, told “NewsNation Live” that the area where the remains were found is between a mile and a mile and a half from where Englebert was last seen.
It’s “very possible that he could have walked to there,” Mumm added.
Police have not yet confirmed that the human remains belong to Englebert.
Body was found off the beaten path
Mumm also explained that “where the body was actually found is very rugged terrain.”
Mumm said there are no trails on the side of the mountain where the remains were found and that he’d “never seen anyone actually hike” in that area.
“You’re only supposed to be on the trail,” he continued.
