(NewsNation) — A 14-year-old girl who was involved in a relationship with a 24-year-old man told her friends she was pregnant two weeks before she disappeared.
The disappearance of Danielle Bell
Danielle Bell disappeared in 2001, and her sister is on a crusade to get new eyes on the case and justice for her sister.
Bonnie Bell said Danielle was the outgoing one between them, a cheerleader with a lot of friends.
“One of the last times I saw her, we had our photos taken together on Pensacola Beach,” Bonnie Bell said. “We just had a great day together.”
Danielle Bell was only 14 at the time. Her best friend at the time said she promised she would call the next day. The friend asked not to be identified for her safety.
“We talked every day. We were almost inseparable until she started dating Alfredo,” she said. “Honestly, at 13 even, he kind of … I didn’t want to be around him. I could tell, like, it was just off. He was older than us. He just kind of gave me the heebie-jeebies.”
Alfredo Sanchez was 24, 10 years older than Danielle Bell.
The day Danielle Bell disappeared
On Sep. 28, 2001, witnesses saw Bell at a park, reportedly hanging out with Sanchez and some of his friends.
Later, she went to a party on Cedar Tree Lane in Pensacola. The house belonged to 24-year-old Robert Bassett, Sanchez’s friend and a convicted felon.
Danielle Bell never made it home from that party.
Her mother, Susan Bell, told local news outlets what happened.
“I knew Friday something was not right,” she said. “When she didn’t come back or come home or I didn’t hear from her, but by Sunday evening, I knew, and that’s when I called 911.”
In 2017, Bell, who has since passed away, spoke with NewsNation local affiliate WKRG about her suspicions.
“There’s too much evidence, and things point to she was murdered that night,” Bell said.

Bonnie Bell said the delay was in part because her sister didn’t have much supervision at home. She now blames her mother for Danielle’s disappearance because she said Susan allowed Danielle to keep seeing Sanchez in exchange for drugs.
In an initial interview with police, Susan Bell did not give them Sanchez’s name but instead the name of his much younger brother. The brother told police that Danielle had talked about running away because of problems with her mother, leading them to treat the case as a runaway.
Danielle Bell’s pregnancy
About two weeks before she disappeared, Danielle Bell had shared some devastating news with her friends.
“She was crying, and she was just telling me that she thinks she’s pregnant with Alfredo’s baby, and she doesn’t know what she’s going to do,” her best friend said.
Bonnie Bell said Danielle also spoke to their mother.
“My mom said that my sister told her that she was pregnant with Alfredo Sanchez’s child and that Alfredo had told her if she said anything to anyone, he would murder her,” Bonnie Bell said.
A pregnancy could expose the relationship and land him in prison.
“All I know for sure is that she was last seen at Robert Bassett’s house,” Bonnie Bell said. “And that prior to her disappearance, she had been involved in a sexual relationship with a 24-year-old man, which is really child sexual assault.”
Alfredo Sanchez convicted of felony sex offenses
Although searchers never found Danielle Bell, in 2005, Alfredo Sanchez was charged and convinced of felony sex offenses against a child after multiple people recounted knowing about his relationship with Danielle and witnessing them together.
An affidavit filed in the case includes accounts from other girls who were 15 or younger who had sexual encounters with Sanchez.
It also contains a witness account that said about a month before she disappeared, Danielle Bell told witnesses she had been “gang-raped” by Sanchez and his friends after being given large amounts of drugs.
“I believe that they saw a young girl who was fun, willing to do what they wanted and a mother that didn’t care,” Bonnie Bell said. “And they were able to use her in whatever way they thought they could and then get rid of her like a piece of trash.”
Sanchez was also charged and convicted of lying to investigators about his whereabouts at the time Bell disappeared.
He is currently in prison.
Robert Bassett is also currently in prison on unrelated charges, including felony battery.
Neither man has been charged in connection with Bell’s disappearance.
Developments in Bonnie Bell’s case
Over the years, there have been sporadic developments in the case.
In 2010, police seared the septic tank at Bassett’s home, the place Bell was last seen. They would not say what led to the search, only that they didn’t find anything.
In 2012, human remains were reportedly discovered off a dirt road near Sanchez’s home, but they were determined not to be Bell’s.
Looking for more leads
More than 20 years later, Bonnie Bell is on a TikTok crusade to raise awareness about her sister’s case. Bell is critical of the sheriff’s office handling the case and wants a new agency to take a fresh look.
“I think there were individuals at the party that night that knew what happened, and they’ve been scared to talk,” Bell said. “Now that it’s been 23 years and the main suspects are in prison, they will talk now.”
Danielle Bell’s best friend agrees.
“It’s time to speak out, and let’s get Danielle justice,” she said. “It’s been a long time.”
