(NewsNation) — A body discovered during a search has been identified as missing Vermont college student Lia Smith.

A medical examiner ruled Smith’s death a suicide.

Smith, a senior at Middlebury College, was last seen Oct. 17. Her father reported her missing two days later, kicking off the search.

Smith’s body was found last week in Cornwall, Vermont, near the school’s organic farm.

The school newspaper described Smith as a swimming and diving athlete who was majoring in computer science and statistics. She was a member of the chess and Japanese clubs and an advocate for transgender rights.
