(NewsNation) — Whatever you believe tadpole water to be, it almost certainly isn’t.

The trend has become popular on TikTok and is the latest left-field trend to receive support on the social media platform.

What is tadpole water?

Simply put, tadpole water is chia seeds mixed into warm water with a squeeze of lemon juice. Its name is derived from its similar appearance to amphibian larvae.

Is tadpole water safe?

The trend has some proponents on TikTok but there are no current medical examples that the concoction is dangerous or otherwise.

Chia seeds are often used in smoothies or combined with yogurt, and fruit. They are widely known to help quell appetite by increasing the feeling of being full.

According to a recent Harvard article, chia seeds include an array of nutrients such as antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber, and minerals including magnesium and calcium.

Lemon juice is high in vitamin C, which helps fight infection and can assist with getting firmer skin, according to the National Institutes of Health.
