(NewsNation) — Weight-loss drugs have soared in popularity in recent years, but how safe are they?
The percentage of adult patients in the United States prescribed a GLP-1 drug, also known as a weight-loss drug, increased from less than 1% to 4% between 2019 and 2024, according to a FAIR Health report. During the same period, adult patients with an overweight or obesity diagnosis increased from 10.4% to 15.7%.
So, how safe are weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro?
Are weight-loss drugs safe?
Shawnda Dorantes, a certified family nurse practitioner and advanced practice registered nurse, told NewsNation the medications are safe when prescribed and monitored by a qualified medical provider.
“These medications are only prescribed when we feel confident they’re an appropriate fit, and we closely monitor patients throughout their journey to ensure both safety and success,” she said. “When used responsibly and under expert guidance, they can be a powerful tool for long-term health and wellness.”
Dorantes, who owns Beauty Lounge Medical Spa in San Marcos, California, treats hundreds of patients under a medical weight-loss program.
“We carefully evaluate each patient’s overall health, history and goals before initiating any treatment,” she said.
What are the benefits of weight-loss drugs?
GLP-1s are intended to help patients lose weight, but doctors have observed additional benefits, such as blood sugar level control, lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels and a reduced risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.
Dorantes said many of her patients have also noticed better sleep and increased confidence.
What are potential risks of taking weight-loss drugs?
Any medication can come with side effects. Patients could experience constipation and nausea, but Dorantes emphasized the importance of consulting with a medical professional to consider all potential risks.
“Weight-loss medications aren’t a magic fix, but they can be life-changing when paired with lifestyle changes and expert guidance,” Dorantes said. “We’ve seen patients who’ve struggled with their weight for decades, some who’ve tried every diet, some who’ve even had weight-loss surgery to no avail, finally start to see real, lasting progress.”
She also said, “It’s a new era in weight care, and it’s helping people reclaim their health and confidence like never before.”
