(NewsNation) — With flu season coming up soon, you may have a lot of questions, like when the best time to get a flu shot is and if insurance covers it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness and in extreme cases, lead to death.

The CDC says the best way to prevent it is by getting a flu vaccine.

Here are the answers to some of the common questions surrounding flu season.

Should everyone get the shot?

The CDC recommends everyone who is six months or older to get a flu shot. People that may have severe allergies to some vaccine components should avoid getting the flu vaccine with that component.

You should check with your doctor for personalized guidance on flu vaccines.

When is the best time to get vaccinated?

Influenza typically peaks in February in the U.S. The best months to get a flu shot are September, October and November. According to Cleveland Clinic, getting vaccinated during any of those months will allow your body to build up protective antibodies as flu season starts.

Will the flu shot be available around the country?

Yes, pharmacy chains like Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy have already begun offering flu shots for this year, along with grocers like Walmart and Kroger who offer them at their clinics.

You can also use the CDC’s flu vaccine finder to find a location near you to get your flu shot.

Can you give yourself a flu vaccine at home?

Yes, back in September of 2024, AstraZeneca’s FluMist was the first self-administered flu vaccine to be approved for use in the U.S. The needle-free vaccine can be self-administered by adults up to 49 years of age or administered by a parent/caregiver to individuals 2-17 years of age.

Are flu vaccines covered by insurance?

Flu shots are covered by most health insurance plans. Some clinics across the country may offer the shot to people regardless of if they are insured or not.
