(NewsNation) — Social media influencers have gone viral promoting a health trend on TikTok called the “cortisol cocktail.” The influencers claim the drink can lower stress levels by helping to manage cortisol, better known as the “stress hormone.” However, is it effective?
The “cocktail” itself does not contain any alcohol. Instead, it is typically made with orange juice, coconut water and magnesium powder. According to WebMD, influencers swear that this combination of ingredients can boost adrenal gland functions.
Dr. Theodore C. Friedman, professor at the UCLA School of Medicine, said in an interview with WebMD that if the drink could boost adrenal gland functions, it would help address cortisol levels. This is because “the adrenal glands, located just above your kidneys, produce more than 50 hormones, including the ‘stress’ hormone cortisol.”
However, nutritionist Amie Parry-Jones says this is not the case. In an interview with Healthline, she said, “The cortisol mocktail sounds fun, but it’s highly unlikely to lead to any real results in reducing cortisol or addressing stress levels in the long term.”
The best way to lower cortisol, states Friedman, is through a combination of a healthy diet, regular exercise and a consistent sleep schedule. If you are still feeling sluggish, he recommends you “see an endocrinologist, because if you have an adrenal issue, they can treat it, and if you don’t, they can help identify the underlying cause of your fatigue.”
