CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Pauline Volpi has been a fixture at the Stop & Shop off Atwood Avenue in Cranston for the past 40 years.
The beloved cashier is known for sporting thick-rimmed glasses on the job, and has a variety of colors to match her outfits.
“Whatever I’m wearing, I have the color glasses to go with it,” she explained.

But those who regularly run into Volpi at the grocery store might not know that she doesn’t even need them.
“[The glasses] are just for show,” she said. “I don’t need real glasses — not yet anyway.”
Volpi, who will be turning 89 years old this summer, has noticed over the years that shoppers will seek her register out.
“I must be good,” she quipped. “I talk to them like they’re my friends.”

It’s something store manager Rick Fraielli has noticed as well.
“I think she has a lot of regulars that will only cash out at her register,” he said. “She’s a good person.”
Volpi told 12 News she feels right at home behind the register and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.
“It keeps my brain going,” she said. “If my brain is still good, then I’m going to be working.”

Volpi’s secret to living a long and happy life is simple.
“I pray a lot, and go to the doctors,” she said. “That’s what I do.”
Anyone who wants to swing by and see Volpi can do so on Sunday and Monday nights.
