NEW JERSEY (PIX11) — This Mother’s Day, a mother and daughter in New Jersey have a lot to be grateful for, as it’s their first Mother’s Day being cancer-free.
Donna and Genna Karp-Shriber were diagnosed with breast cancer as they were preparing for Genna’s wedding last spring.
For Donna, this was her second time battling cancer. Her first battle came at age 26 in the 1990s when she was pregnant with her first child.
In a sad twist of fate, her daughter also received her diagnosis at 26.
They discovered they both carry a dangerous gene that increases their likelihood of breast cancer for both mother and daughter. They say their doctor, Dr. David Anderson, and the team at Mount Sinai saved their lives.
Together, they walked down the aisle for Genna’s big day last April.
Every day, they said they cherish being alive and that they have an important message for other women: Prevention is key.
