SOMERS, Conn. (WJW) — A Connecticut man said his family cat led him to a miracle — by finding a $150,000 winning Powerball ticket he didn’t know he had.

Russell Ruff, a school bus driver from Somers, said the ticket had been missing for weeks.

It wasn’t until the family’s 16-year-old cat crawled behind the bed that Ruff and his sons moved the furniture and found the pet — and the ticket.

“We didn’t think too much of it,” Ruff told the Connecticut Lottery. “We lost the ticket at home and didn’t really check the numbers.”

He had purchased the Powerball ticket on Friday, June 13. The drawing took place the following night. The ticket matched four out of five winning numbers plus the Powerball. Because Ruff had added Power Play, his prize jumped from $50,000 to $150,000.

After using the CT Lottery app to scan the ticket multiple times to be sure, Ruff said the realization hit: “It was a miracle.”

The family now credits their curious cat with the life-changing discovery.
