NOLENSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Purple Heart Army veteran and his family are receiving a brand new, mortgage-free home in Nolensville, Tennessee, which was constructed to meet their unique needs.

Through generous donations, the Gary Sinise Foundation builds custom homes for severely wounded heroes. According to Sinise, the goal is to help veterans regain their freedom and independence.

“We want them to know we never forget,” said Sinise. “I’m a grateful American and I want them to know it, and I want to be somebody who can rally support from around the country.”

Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Joshua Hargis and his family walked through their new home Monday, Nov. 11, taking in the 2,800 square-foot single-floor, four bedroom, and three bathroom space.

Sergeant Hargis served four deployments in Afghanistan serving as a K9 Handler. During his last deployment in 2013, his unit was ambushed while conducting routine operations.

Four members of Hargis’ team were killed, along with his K9 companion. Hargis lost both his legs running into danger to help another Ranger.

He told NewsNation affiliate WKRN that the home is a life-changing opportunity.

“For our family it means so much more, it’s mental, it’s emotional, it’s freedom to be able to interact as a family a little bit better,” expressed Hargis. “All of the small details in that house that are going to make not only my day to day easier, but my wife’s day to day easier raising two boys, it’s a huge blessing.”
