ORLAND PARK, Ill. (WGN) — A kitten is safe thanks to firefighters who rescued it from a smoke-filled apartment in a Chicago suburb after a fire broke out Saturday morning.
Crews with the Orland Fire Protection District were called to a home, where they found smoke coming from the eaves on the north side of the building.
The fire, which started in an apartment on the northwest corner, caused significant damage to the kitchen before it was brought under control, officials said.
No people were injured, but firefighters discovered the kitten struggling to breathe inside the unit. They administered oxygen on the scene before returning the kitten to its owners.
Photos released by the fire department show the kitten receiving oxygen from a firefighter to overcome intense smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
