(NEXSTAR) – Actor and comedian Colin Mochrie, perhaps best known for his tenure on the improv series “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” was forced to postpone multiple live appearances after suffering a detached retina, according to a statement posted to his Instagram page.
Mochrie, 68, was scheduled to undergo “emergency eye surgery” on Friday, the team behind his current HYPROV tour announced.
“His medical team is optimistic about his full recovery, but he needs time to rest and heal,” reads the statement.

Mochrie and hypnotist Asad Mecci are currently performing a string of dates in the U.S. and Canada on their HYPROV tour, during which the duo invite audience members to perform improv with Mochrie under hypnosis.
So far, only the dates scheduled for Ontario, on Jan. 2 and 3, were canceled. Their next show, on Feb. 14 in Wisconsin, is still listed among upcoming their upcoming tour dates.
The canceled shows are being rescheduled, and more information will be available at a later date, according to the statement shared by HYPROV.
“We understand this new is disappointing for those who were looking forward to the performances, and we truly appreciate your understanding.”
A detached retina is considered a “serious eye condition” that can lead to vision loss or blindness, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It’s most often caused by aging, but can occur after an eye injury. Those with a family history of retinal detachment are more susceptible, Cleveland Clinic explains.
While often painless, retinal detachment can be identified through symptoms including increased floaters, or “tiny specks or squiggly lines” floating within your vision, as well as sudden impaired vision or shadows, the Mayo Clinic says. Anyone who suspects they may be suffering a detached retina is urged to seek an eye examination or treatment immediately, as symptoms can progress quickly. The condition can be treated with laser therapy, cryopexy (freezing) surgery or a vitrectomy, where the gel-like vitreous humor is removed from the inside of the eye to help re-seal the detached retina.
The statement posted to Mochrie’s page did not detail any causes for his medical issue. A representative for HYPROV was not immediately available to comment on the status of future shows.
Mochrie, who was born in Scotland but grew up in Canada, has been a staple of “Whose Line Is It Anyway”? for decades, first appearing in the original U.K. version and every American iteration thereafter. He also recently toured with fellow “WLIIA?” alum Brad Sherwood on their “Asking for Trouble” tour.
