(NewsNation) — Nick Reiner, son of actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner, was taken into custody over the weekend after his parents were found dead in their Los Angeles home.

Nick Reiner was arrested last night and booked early Monday on murder charges by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according to online records.

Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead at their home Sunday. Rob Reiner, the son of a comedy giant who became one himself as one of the preeminent filmmakers of his generation, was 78. The couple shared three children together — Nick, Jake and Romy Reiner — all of whom have worked in the TV and film industries.

Nick Reiner struggled with drug addiction

Nick Reiner has been the most publicly visible of the Reiner siblings and has spoken openly about his struggles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness.

In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he said his substance use began in his teenage years, and he first entered rehab at the age of 15, ultimately returning 17 times. Those experiences loosely inspired the film “Being Charlie,” which Nick co-wrote and Rob Reiner directed.

In the same interview, Nick Reiner said he became homeless after refusing to return to rehab, explaining that his parents insisted on treatment as a condition of staying at home.

“If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless. Now, I’ve been home for a really long time,” he said. “But there was a lot of dark years there.”

Nick Reiner’s relationship with his father

Nick Reiner has also spoken about his complicated relationship with his father. In an interview with AOL, he said he “didn’t bond a lot” with his father while growing up. That dynamic was reflected in “Being Charlie,” including a line in which the father character tells his son, “I’d rather you hate me, and you be alive.”

At the time of the film’s release, the Los Angeles Times reported Rob Reiner and his wife had, at their lowest moments, wondered whether their son’s struggles would end tragically.

Rob Reiner later said revisiting those experiences during filming was difficult but ultimately healing.

“It was very, very hard going through it the first time, with these painful and difficult highs and lows,” he said. “And then making the movie dredged it all up again.”

He added that the process helped the family work through past trauma and grow closer.

Authorities have released few details about the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner, and the investigation remains ongoing.
