Spoiler Alert: This story contains a spoiler for the 36th season finale of “The Simpsons.”

(NewsNation) — “The Simpsons” creators decided to use the 36th season finale to kill off a beloved character — in the future.

The episode, which is called “Estranger Things,” focuses on Bart and Lisa Simpson’s sibling bond, who end up growing apart after they stop watching “The Itchy & Scratchy Show.” This leads Marge Simpson to worry about her children having a strained relationship.

Then, the episode hops into the future — 35 years, to be exact — to show her fears become a reality after she dies. In this flash-forward scene, Lisa is the commissioner of the NBA and is paying for Homer to live in a retirement home that Bart is running without a license.

‘The Simpsons’ season finale shows Marge Simpson’s funeral

In one scene, fans get to see Marge’s funeral, where Homer is standing over her grave surrounded by his family. Homer is eventually taken out of the retirement home by Senior Protective Services and they want to send him to Florida.

During this time, Lisa finds a video of Marge, who tells her and Bart that they always need to depend on one another. This inspires the sibling duo to reunite and rescue Homer. Once they have their father, they take him home, and they all watch an old episode of “The Itchy & Scratchy Show.”

The episode ends with Marge looking down on her family, saying, “I’m so happy my kids are close again.” Then, Ringo Starr appears and says, “Love, we’ll be late for the Heaven Buffett. There’s a shrimp tower.”

“Okay, Ringo. I’m just so glad that we’re allowed to marry different people in Heaven,” she responds before kissing the animated Ringo Starr.

Fans shocked over Marge Simpson’s death in ‘The Simpsons’

After the episode aired, fans took to social media to share their thoughts. One fan on X said, “I haven’t even watched The Simpsons in 10+ years, but they really killed MARGE?!”

Another fan asked, “Why are marge and ringo dead?” Most fans were upset with the reveal, with one saying, “Marge Simpson is dead? Utter woke nonsense!”

Other reactions from fans include, “What’s this I’m hearing they killed Marge Simpson off????” and “Marge Simpson is dead?! wow.”
