(NewsNation) — Sydney Sweeney’s new indie film underwhelmed at the box office following controversy over her American Eagle jeans campaign.

Sweeney’s “Americana” opened in 16th place at the domestic box office, earning $500,000 in its opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film opened in slightly over 1,100 theaters.

Despite the film’s seemingly low box office numbers, the film was never expected to open with a large or midsized box office because of its indie status.

“Americana” is expected to be profitable for Lionsgate’s Premiere Releasing label, according to Deadline.

Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle backlash

The “Euphoria” actress promoted the film on her Instagram last week, following weeks of silence after the controversy around her American Eagle campaign.

Critics said that the company and Sweeney promoted the idea that white beauty standards were genetically superior to others.

American Eagle’s fall campaign features Sweeney in head-to-toe denim, standing beside a billboard that reads “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes.” She crosses out “genes” and replaces it with “jeans,” highlighting the brand’s signature denim.
