Hollywood, politicians react to Rob Reiner’s death

(NewsNation) — Legendary director-actor Rob Reiner’s sudden death has Hollywood mourning.

Tributes poured in after the 78-year-old and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead inside their Brentwood, California, home Sunday afternoon.

Former President Barack Obama said he and former first lady Michelle Obama are “heartbroken.”

“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action,” he wrote on X. “Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

Reiner’s career spans decades and titles, including “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “Misery.”

Comedian Kevin Nealon posted, “Rob Reiner. The humor is smart and the heart is real. His films were part of the air for us. Grateful for what he made, and for what he and his wife gave the world.”

Actor Elijah Wood said he was “Horrified to hear of the passing of Rob Reiner and his wonderful wife Michelle. So much love to their kids and family.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass gave a more personal tribute, in a statement saying, “Personally, I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele. I knew Rob and have tremendous respect for him.”

Politician Nancy Pelosi also commented on their deaths, saying, “The news of a deadly assault on Rob and Michelle Reiner in their home is devastating. It’s hard to think of anyone more remarkable and excellent in every field and endeavor they pursued.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department received a call for medical aid around 3:38 p.m. and upon arriving, found two victims inside the Reiner residence with stab wounds.

Although the Los Angeles Police Department declined to identify the decedents in a press briefing Sunday, a spokesperson for the family told the Los Angeles Times that Rob and Michele had died.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the statement said.

Police are investigating the deaths as homicides. No suspect is in custody, but officials said there is no threat to the community, and they plan to question multiple family members.
