(NewsNation) — Prince William has reportedly banned his uncle, Prince Andrew, from his coronation when he eventually becomes king, according to the Sunday Times.
The news comes days after Andrew relinquished his royal title of Duke of York after continuous headlines about his friendship with sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
In a statement from Buckingham Palace on Friday, Andrew said, “The continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the royal family.”
“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me,” Andrew said in his statement on Friday. “As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”
Prince William to ban Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson from royal events
William was consulted on the decision to strip his uncle of his royal titles, according to Buckingham Palace, but was concerned that the “Andrew problem” would continue and had decided to take a stronger stance by banning Andrew from all parts of royal life, including his coronation.
Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will no longer be invited to royal events, the Sunday Times reports.
An email from Ferguson to the disgraced financier was leaked in September, showing her support for Epstein following his conviction of soliciting a minor.
“I know you feel hellaciously let down by me,” Ferguson wrote to Epstein in 2011, according to the U.K.’s Mail on Sunday and the Sun. “You have always been a steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me and my family.”
Prince Andrew steps down from royal life
The former Duke of York was forced to step down by his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, in 2019 after a disastrous BBC interview with “Newsnight” to address his relationship with Epstein and quell public criticism.
During his interview with the BBC, Andrew was questioned as to why he maintained a relationship with the financier following Epstein’s 2009 release from prison after pleading guilty to charges of soliciting a prostitute and of solicitation of prostitution with a minor under the age of 18.
Andrew had reportedly ceased contact with Epstein in 2006 after news broke that Epstein was being investigated, but established contact with him in 2010, where he was reportedly seen at Epstein’s NYC mansion, to let him know that their relationship was over, according to The Guardian.
Andrew kept in touch with Epstein after 2010
In January, emails published in court documents from the U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority showed that Prince Andrew was in contact with Epstein after claiming he ended their friendship in 2010, according to the BBC.
In a February 2011 email, Andrew reportedly wrote to Epstein, “Keep in close touch and we’ll play some more soon!!!!”
Epstein died by suicide in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial.
