(NewsNation) — Nicole Kidman made a commitment in 2017 to work with a female director every 18 months, and she’s stayed true to that promise.
Over the last eight years, Kidman has worked with 19 female directors either as a producer or an actor, according to Variety.
A recent diversity report from the University of California, Los Angeles found that women directed fewer than 15% of theatrically released films.
In an interview with Time magazine, Kidman said there is pressure for women directors to “be perfect” right out of the gate.
“It can be changed,” she said. “But it can only be changed by actually being in the films of women.”
Nicole Kidman wants to open doors for women directors
Kidman recently starred in Mimi Cave’s “Holland” and Lulu Wang’s “Expats,” as well as “The Perfect Couple,” directed by Susanne Bier.
Kidman told Variety last year she works as much as she does because she wants to open opportunities for people in the industry.
“It’s very hard for me to go, ‘OK, I’m just going to take care of myself,’ because I’m so much about taking care of other people,” Kidman said. “I’m thinking, ‘I can create more work for people. I can create jobs for people.’ And also, I love it. I have the passion. I’ve just got to take care of my body. I wish I had superpowers because I would love to be everywhere.”
Kidman is currently filming “Practical Magic 2,” another Bier project, alongside Sandra Bullock.
