(NewsNation) — One Direction singer Liam Payne’s medical cause of death has been revealed as “polytrauma,” according to the results of a UK based inquiry.
Payne, 31, died in October after he fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.
An autopsy conducted in the country found that he died from multiple injuries and external bleeding, but a UK inquest was also opened into the singer’s death.
That inquiry, which was confirmed by Dr. Roberto Victor Cohen, found polytrauma, which occurs when a person experiences injuries to multiple body parts and organ systems, reported the BBC.
The UK hearing, which was held at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court on 17 December, stated that “some time” more will be needed to formally ascertain how Payne died, the outlet reported.
The hearing was also told Payne was formally identified “with the assistance of the funeral directors in Buckinghamshire.”
“Whilst there are ongoing investigations in Argentina into the circumstances of Liam’s death, over which I have no legal jurisdiction, it is anticipated that procuring the relevant information to address particularly how Liam came by his death may take some time through the formal channel of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office,” Senior Coroner Crispin Butler said, according to the BBC.
Five people have been charged in Payne’s death.
One of the two people ordered to be put under preventive prison — a form of pre-trial detention — was an employee of the hotel in Buenos Aires where Payne stayed until he died after falling from the balcony of his room in October.
The officer said the other person was a waiter Payne met in a restaurant. The officer, who requested not to be identified as a condition to talk about the ruling, said that both face charges for supplying drugs and they need to present themselves before the judge.
The judge also charged three other people with manslaughter, including a businessman who was with Payne in Argentina and two managers of the hotel. The official said that they were not ordered to be held under preventive prison.
One Direction was among the most successful boy bands of recent times. It announced an indefinite hiatus in 2016 and Payne — like his former bandmates Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson — pursued a solo career.
