(NewsNation) — Former One Direction singer Liam Payne, who died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after falling from a third-floor balcony in Argentina, appears in a newly released show that was filmed before his death.
The 10-part musical competition show “Building the Band” was released by Netflix on Wednesday after the streaming giant says Payne’s family was consulted and is “supportive of his inclusion.” Host AJ Mclean dedicated the entire series to Payne and his family.
“When we came together to film ‘Building the Band,’ we never imagined we’d soon be saying goodbye to our friend, Liam Payne,” and “Liam is a guest judge in later episodes, and through his presence, we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice,” McLean says in the first episode.
“Building The Band” features singers performing from separate booths and attempting to form bands without ever seeing each other, relying solely on musical chemistry. The Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean hosts, with Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland as judges.
The show blends various elements of popular reality series including: “The Voice,, “Love Island” and “Love is Blind,” creating a unique format centered around musical connection.
The first four episodes premiered Wednesday, with the rest set to release July 16 and July 23.
