The man shot and killed during an attempted catalytic converter theft in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday has been identified as actor Johnny Wactor, his family confirmed.
Wactor, 37, appeared as Brando Corbin in 164 episodes of popular soap opera “General Hospital” between 2020 and 2022. He also appeared in other shows such as “Westworld” and “Criminal Minds.”
His death, first reported by TMZ, was confirmed to NewsNation’s Los Angeles affiliate, KTLA, by Johnny’s younger brother, Grant Wactor.
According to the Los Angels Police Department, officers responded to the area of Pico Boulevard and Hope Street around 3:25 a.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police said the man saw three men stealing the catalytic converter from his vehicle. When he approached them, they turned around and shot him.
The man, now revealed to be Wactor, died at a local hospital. The suspects have not been found, police said.
Grant Wactor told KTLA his brother did not try to confront the apparent thieves and even put his hands up.
Tributes to Wactor have been coming in since news broke Sunday evening. The “General Hospital” X account called him “one of a kind and a pleasure to work with,” while co-star Sofia Mattsson said her “heart is so utterly broken.
“He’s a funny, smart guy,” Grant Wactor told KTLA. “He’s intelligent. He was very much one of the most charismatic people I’ve ever met. He is the hardest working person I’ve ever been. Anything that set his mind to he definitely, absolutely just, he sold out to do it well and be the best at it no matter what it was. And he was just a great person, a great brother, and he was a role model.”
