(NewsNation) — Jeremy O. Harris is officially a free man again, according to multiple reports.

The Tony-nominated playwright was released from custody after three weeks Tuesday by Japanese authorities after being arrested last month on suspicion of smuggling ecstasy.

Harris was stopped at Naha Airport in Okinawa on Nov. 16, when officers found MDMA in a container in a tote bag he was carrying. The 36-year-old had left London two days earlier and transited in Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport before arriving in Naha for sightseeing.

Last week, Harris’ case was referred to prosecutors in Naha, although they did not indicate whether charges had been filed at the time.

A representative for Harris acknowledged he was released without charges. They also said the “Emily in Paris” producer is staying in Japan to write and research for an upcoming project.

Had Harris been convicted, he could have faced up to seven years in prison.

Japanese criminal procedures allow investigators to keep a suspect in custody for up to 23 days before indictment.
