(NewsNation) — Amazon MGM Studios has announced that “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve will direct the next “James Bond” movie.
“I grew up watching James Bond films with my father… I’m a die-hard Bond fan,” Villeneuve said. “To me, he’s sacred territory… This is a massive responsibility, but also incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.”
Villeneuve is an award-winning French-Canadian filmmaker. He earned six Academy Awards and multiple guild and critics’ awards for “Dune.” The sequel brought in more than $700 million worldwide and earned two Academy Awards, a Critics’ Choice Award and multiple nominations.
Villeneuve is also known for “Incendies” and “Blade Runner 2049.”
‘James Bond’ casting not yet announced
Amazon MGM Studios has not made any cast or writer announcements for the new “James Bond” film.
There have been many rumors on who could play Bond in the next film, including James Norton, Callum Turner, Idris Elba and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
According to GQ, Elba has taken himself out of consideration several times, despite rumors that he would be leading the newest movie. Last year, The Sun reported Taylor-Johnson had been formally offered the role, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
The next film will be the 60-year-old series’ 26th installment. Amazon MGM Studios now has creative control over the “James Bond” franchise, according to People Magazine. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who stepped back earlier this year, are still co-owners.
