(NEXSTAR) – Imani Dia Smith, a former child actress on Broadway, was fatally stabbed earlier this week in New Jersey, a state official has announced.
Smith, 26, was found with stab wounds at a residence in Edison on the morning of Dec. 21, according to a press release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
A member of Smith’s family has since set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for her parents, who are said to be taking in Smith’s 3-year-old son. The organizer of the GoFundMe page also stated that Smith was “senselessly killed by her boyfriend.”
Middlesex County officials have arrested one person in connection to the stabbing, identifying him as 35-year-old Jordan D. Jackson-Small. They have not confirmed his relationship to Smith, but said the two “knew each other prior to the incident, thus it was not a random act of violence.”
As a child, Smith had starred in the Broadway adaptation of “The Lion King” from 2011 to 2012, Playbill reported.
On her GoFundMe page, a woman who identified herself as Smith’s aunt called her “vivacious, loving and fiercely talented.”
“A true triple-threat performer, she most notably played the role of Young Nala on Broadway in Disney’s Lion King — an experience that reflected the joy, creativity, and light she put into the world,” Smith’s aunt wrote.
In addition to raising money for Smith’s son’s care, Smith’s aunt said their family is seeking donations to cover Smith’s funeral expenses, therapy for her son, and “crime scene cleanup.”
Jackson-Small has been charged with first-degree murder, as well as child endangerment and weapons charges, according to the county prosecutor’s office. He was being held at a correctional center as of Tuesday, according to the office.
