(NewsNation) — Gwyneth Paltrow is seemingly always in the news, whether it’s because of her lifestyle brand Goop or appearing in a cheeky ad for Astronomer, but a new biography sheds further light on the actress.
Journalist Amy Odell takes a deep dive into the A-list actress’s life in her newly released book “Gwyneth,” where she reportedly spoke to 220 sources close to Paltrow, according to The Standard.
Here are a few takeaways from Odell’s just book:
Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop work culture
The “Shallow Hal” actress slowly transitioned from appearing in a slew of movies and TV shows to an entrepreneur, having launched her company Goop in 2008, which started as a weekly newsletter before becoming a wellness company that sold various items, including a makeup line, vitamins, fragrances and more famously, vagina eggs.
According to USA Today, Odell spoke to Goop employees who described the company as “one of the most difficult working environments they had ever encountered,” and that Paltrow at times “blurred the lines between professional and personal.”
Paltrow also pushed back on Condé Nast wanting to fact-check Goop for its short-lived magazine. The brand had promoted debunked wellness fads, like vaginal steaming and the benefits of its vaginal jade eggs, with the latter leading to the company being fined $145,000 in 2018 for unproven medical claims.
The wellness guru has been lambasted by critics over the years for the out-of-touch lifestyle she promotes through Goop. Paltrow claimed that last year the company’s revenue was up 10% what it was in 2023.
Whether Goop has made a profit is unknown, according to TechCrunch.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s relationships with Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck
The “Shakespeare in Love” actress has had high-profile relationships throughout her career.
She was in a relationship with “F1” star Brad Pitt from 1994 to 1997, and the pair even got engaged.
Odell revealed that Paltrow told a crew member while filming “Emma” that she worried the two’s backgrounds were different and even told an interviewer that she had to explain the difference in caviars, The Telegraph reports.
The Oscar winner also dated Ben Affleck from 1997 to 2000. The actors reportedly had great chemistry with one another, but Paltrow allegedly had concerns about Affleck’s addiction issues, according to The Telegraph.
Falling out with Madonna
Paltrow became friends with Madonna after the “Material Girl” wrote a letter to a then-teenage Paltrow on her father’s behest, urging her to stop smoking, according to Odell.
Their friendship fell apart after Madonna showed up on an island where Paltrow and her then-husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, were vacationing.

“Madonna seemed to know that Gwyneth would be there, which Gwyneth seemed to find strange,” a friend told Odell.
Madonna then insisted Gwyneth and Martin join her for a big group dinner at a long table, where Madonna went off on her daughter, Lourdes. Gwyneth and Martin were disgusted by the behavior.
“‘I can’t be around this woman anymore,’ Martin told Gwyneth. ‘She’s awful.’ Gwyneth agreed that Madonna was toxic and ended the friendship,” Odell wrote, according to Vulture.
