(NEXSTAR) — Australian actor Tristan Rogers, best known for his role as Robert Scorpio on daytime soap “General Hospital,” has died after a battle with lung cancer. He was 79.

On Friday, Rogers’ manager Meryl Soodak confirmed the actor’s death to ABC News and other outlets.

In a post on the official “General Hospital” Instagram page, show executive producer Frank Valentini wrote: “The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken to hear of Tristan Rogers’ passing. Tristan has captivated our fans for more than 50 years and Port Charles will not be the same without him (or Robert Scorpio)… Tristan was a one-of-a-kind talent and will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.”

Rogers originally played the popular “James Bond”-type character from December 1980 through February 1992, followed by multiple months-long stints over the years where he reprised the character in some form. Rogers’ final appearance on “General Hospital” was a two-day guest spot in July.

In addition to “General Hospital,” the Melbourne-born actor was also a series regular on CBS’ daytime soap “The Young and the Restless” from 2010-11.

Rogers was also a prolific voice actor, with roles in Disney’s “The Rescuers Down Under,” Nickelodeon’s iconic ’90s animated series “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters,” and 2000s after-school favorite “Batman Beyond.” Additionally, Rogers did voiceovers for a “Mad Max” video game and work for Reebok and Outback Steakhouse.

Rogers’ reps announced his cancer diagnosis just last month, with reps telling Deadline and other outlets in part: “While he remains hopeful and is working closely with his medical team on a treatment plan, this is a challenging time for Tristan and his family… Tristan sends his love to his fans and wants them to know how much he appreciates their loyalty and encouragement over the years.”

Though Rogers died of lung cancer, manager Soodak emphasized that he had not been a smoker.

Rogers is survived by wife Teresa and their children, Sara and Cale.
